Benefits of Using Teak Sealer

UV Protection

One of the main reasons furniture loses the brightness of its color over time, and its structure growing weak is its exposure to ultraviolet rays.

UV rays accelerate the oxidation of wood and cause it to become greyish and have mildew growth on them.

However, applying a single coating of teak sealer every year ensures that the furniture becomes resistant to UV rays and slows down the oxidation process.

Therefore, your furniture will be able to retain its bright and shiny exterior for a comparatively longer time.

Security from Organic Outgrowth

Maintaining furniture in a tropical or damp climate can be quite risky as the dampness can severely affect the overall quality of the wood and cause outgrowths like fungus and mildew to develop on it. This outgrowth weakens the wood and creates a disgusting exterior, making it unusable.

Using teak sealer on your furniture will permanently eliminate this problem as it will prevent any type of alien outgrowth from developing on the wood.

Furthermore, it helps preserve the natural oils of the teak, making it retain its quality for a long time.

You will never have to worry about this issue as this product can help you maintain that warm golden brown color of brand-new teak for many years.

Teak Sealer Buying Guide

Teak Sealer Buying Guide

Buying a teak sealer to protect your outdoor furniture or your deck might seem like a complicated task because of all the brands available in the market.

However, if you keep the following factors in mind when making a purchase, you will easily be able to find a quality item.

Water Resistance

One of the key indicators of the efficiency of a teak sealer is how well it can handle water. If it doesn’t have a waterproof feature, then you run the risk of having rotten or damp furniture in your hand.

So, be sure to check that the teak sealer is waterproof before purchasing it. Having this benefit ensures that you can leave out your furniture for as long as you want without having to worry about it getting damaged or ruined from the rain.

Finishing

Most manufacturers tend to give little thought to aesthetics when making teak sealers. However, the best products of these kinds put equal importance on both maintaining the quality of the wood as well as retaining its beauty after application.

The premium teak sealers in the present market promise to provide an additional shade to the wood on the application as a way of preserving its looks.

Using these units will ensure that your furniture won't look any less presentable than it did before application.

Ease of Use

Using teak sealers on your furniture or wood can be quite a lengthy process and can stress you out after some time. The fear of the sealer getting all runny and leaking out of the furniture can make the job even more frustrating.

To turn the process of sealing wood into a fun and quick procedure, it’s best to go for a teak sealer that can seal into the wood after immediate use. An additional feature of a read-made product can be a bonus perk too.

Expense

Expenses play a big role in determining how useful and effective sealer can be. However, there is a big misconception that the more expensive the fluid is, the more range of benefits and perks it can offer.

You will be glad to know that this is not true at all, and you won't have to dish out a handful of cash simply for a good teak sealer.

Just keep an eye on the perks provided in the container, and you will easily get a good value product at mid-range pricing.

Quantity

One of the most significant indicators of whether a teak sealer is of good value is to notice the quantity it comes in. The last thing you want to do is to rush to the hardware store every time you need to maintain your furniture.

Ideally, most teak sealers come in quantities of a gallon; however, you can get similar products in quantities as much as 5 gallons.

It certainly adds to the value of the item and allows you to maintain wood at a much lesser cost.

Teak Oil Vs. Teak Sealer

Teak Oil Vs. Teak Sealer

Many homeowners seem to believe that teak oil is basically a synonym for teak sealer. However, they are very wrong, and there is a big difference between the two of these products.

Materials

Firstly, teak oil is a completely organic product which is made from linseed and tung oil with a few additives. Applying it into the wood will cause it to seep in and accelerate the fiber while providing the wood with a rich and earthy look to significantly elevate its aesthetics.

On the other hand, a teak sealer is very different from teak oil as they are artificial and doesn’t seep into the wood, unlike its more natural counterpart.

Furthermore, they do not amplify the quality of the wood but rather seal it in, thus eliminating all sorts of external factors like moisture and UV rays from damaging the wood.

Purpose

While teak oils focus on maintaining the aesthetics and improving the already existent features of your wood, teak sealers are more dedicated to safeguarding the wood.

On the other hand, teak oil is an organic alternative, while teak sealers are more dedicated to performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the Average Longevity of Teak Sealers?

Answer: Typically, teak sealers can last for as long as an entire year. The more premium ones which provide protection from UV rays can last for a comparatively longer time.

2. Does Teak Require Sealing?

Answer: Teak is known for creating natural oils of its own, which can highly increase its resistive capabilities and make it hardier than most kinds of wood.

However, if you plan on using it to make outdoor furniture, it’s wise to give it a good lick of a teak sealer to give the furnishing an additional layer of protection.

3. Are Teak Sealers Applicable on Top of Teak Oil?

Answer: Teak oil and teak sealers do not mix and match well, with both of them eliminating each of their protective qualities. It’s best to dry out the teak below sunlight for a few weeks before applying teak sealer to it.

4. What is the Removal Process of Teak Sealer?

Answer: There are a large number of teak cleaners and teak sealer removers available in the current market. Depending on your convenience, any of them can easily help remove teak sealer from wood.

5. How Much Time Does Teak Take to Turn Gray?

How Much Time Does Teak Take to Turn Gray

Answer: Teak normally takes around 9-12 months to become grey. Depending on the presence of UV rays in the environment, this process can speed up too.

Final Words

Making furniture with teak might have been a scary thought for you previously as it is a pretty expensive wood, and there’s a lot of confusion over how to maintain it best.

However, now that you have gone through our review, finding the best teak sealer is a piece of cake for you now.

All that’s left now is to head over to the hardware shop and buy the most suitable teak for yourself. Start building your dream project as worrying about maintaining them has permanently become non-existent.

  1. I’m having trouble w/ a Teak (or so I was told) dining table I’ve tried to rehab. Link to photos is included below.

Essentially I tried to clean, lightly sand, rinse & then oil (3 coats, Watco Danish Oil) an older Danish modern dining table I purchased a few months back, which I was told was Teak (I believe the main tabletop is, less sure about the leaves after cleaning/ oiling).

I definitely made some mistakes in the process.

I first used “Goof off” to remove some paint & pen marks & other stains (mostly on the legs, edges).

I then used Star Brite Teak Cleaner & Brightener, using a stiff bristle brush to “scrub” away dirt & any old oils.

I then used my electric pressure washer to blast away any dirt/ gunk (likely my first mistake, as the water penetrated too deeply/ unevenly: see pics).

I then wiped the table down with a cloth towel, but likely did not allow it to dry fully (1 hour-ish dry time in the sun in my driveway).

I then applied Watch Danish Oil (clear) as directed: heavy wet first coat (all coats with laquer brush), 15 mins dry time, wipe excess. Less heavy second coat, 30 mins dry time, wipe excess. Similar third coat, 30 mins dry time, wipe excess.

It was windy outside by this point, & the oil was very sticky (too old?) so despite my best efforts with a tack cloth, some various blowing plant bits, bugs, dust, other impurities, did get on the surface.

I then moved the table indoors to dry/ cure (Northern California, not very humid, indoor temp ~65 Fahrenheit). It was VERY sticky for the first 3 days, but mostly dried to just a slight tackiness in spots. It has now been about 10 days since I moved it inside/ “completed the rehab”. But it doesn’t look/ feel right.

I’m trying to figure out what I need to do to fix what I did wrong, improve the uniformity of color & feel/ finish & remove the tackiness.

I’m not sure if I need to use mineral spirits to remove the oil (excess & otherwise), resand, re-rinse (this time WITHOUT high pressure hoses), allow to dry for a day or 3, then try to re-oil again with a new fresher (hopefully) can of Watch Danish oil, or what.

    My issues are as follows:

    1) leaves are a distinctly different (darker) color & finish. Much more glossy than main table top. Almost looks like a veneer. I’m not even sure if it’s the same wood as the “core” table (which I actually DO think is teak)- see pics

    2) main tabletop is very rough (raised grain) & varying spots of flat/ dry, alternating with other spots more “wet” & tacky – see pics

    3) pressure washer seems to have “embedded” moisture deep into the surface, beneath the oil, causing odd discolorations/ not uniform water stains – see pics

Would love any help/ guidance on fixing what I did wrong, & hopefully getting this table “perfect” with my second go-round.

Thanks in advance for the help.
