A PAIR OF GEORGE III MAHOGANY SIDE TABLES An important pair of large scale late 18th century Hepplewhite period serpentine mahogany console tables, the shaped tops with a richly veneered swept apron centred by a carved swagged urn, on graceful cabriole legs with shell and flower carved knees. English, circa 1780 Height: 3 ft; 91.5 cm Width: 5 ft 5 in; 165 cm Depth: 2 ft 3 in; 68.5 cm The form of this unusually large pair of tables is taken from George Hepplewhite, 'The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer’s Guide', third edition, 1794, pl. 65 and 66. The refined French influence is clearly shown from the serpentine fronts and the elegant cabriole legs which would have required a very skilled metropolitan cabinet maker to execute.
