A fine pair of late 18th century white-painted and parcel gilt pedestals, the later square white marble tops on a beaded and egg and dart cornice above a carved acanthus frieze with square tapering fluted bodies on stepped block bases.

It is unusual for pedestals to be decorated on all sides, which may indicate that these were originally intended to stand within the setting of a columnar screen dividing a room. The fashion for dividing rooms in this manner, particularly galleries and libraries, was popularised by architects such as Robert Adam (1728-1792) and James Wyatt (1746-1813), and examples may be seen in the libraries at Kenwood House, Hampstead, and Heveningham Hall, Suffolk.
