My Ronald Phillips +44 (0)20 7493 2341

A magnificent and extremely rare late 18th century Adam period ormolu mounted white painted oval wine cooler in the manner of Mayhew and Ince retaining most of the original paint surface having ormolu rim with four paterae inlaid blocks and finely gadrooned moulding below and fluted belt divided by tapering and fluted volutes with ormolu roundels and bold husk loop handles; on four fielded tapering ormolu mounted legs terminating in block feet.

The use of husks, fluting, type of paterae and gadrooned moulding are all characteristic design features of the well known London cabinetmakers Mayhew and Ince. The high quality ormolu mounts can be attributed to Diedrich Anderson who supplied similar superior metal mounts to Mayhew and Ince. A similar pair of wine coolers with almost identical mounts but veneered in yew wood is in a private collection in New York.

Note: Now fitted with a later zinc liner.
